*Call before you send anything to a venue, bar or performance place. Speak with the talent buyer, whether it’s via email or phone so he or she can give you permission to send your material.

I’ve known bands who purchase a copy of the Musicians Atlas and, armed with a bevy of press kits and postage, send information via post to every single venue listed. Then they sit by the phone and wonder why none of the venues are calling them to book their band. They’ve entered another dimension. One where time and money spent sending press materials has dissolved into nothingness. Welcome to the Twilight Zone.

An unsolicited press package is akin to  “junk mail” to talent buyers and bar owners. What happens to your junk mail? Imagine that same scene in a talent buyer’s office.

It’s important to realize everyone you know, from the homeless man in McDonalds to your directionless daughter to your super successful neighbor, is doing the best they can do.

You may approach this thought with doubt. “Really?” you question. “I don’t see that my (son,daughter, mother in law, friend, brother, sister, co-worker, boss, etc) is really doing their best. They’re a mess. Constantly in the midst of some sort of drama. They are not doing their best.”
