"The problem is this: no spreadsheet, no bibliography and no list of resources is sufficient proof to someone who chooses not to believe. The skeptic will always find a reason, even if it's one the rest of us don't think is a good one. Relying too much on proof distracts you from the real mission-which is emotional connection." -Seth Godin I work in world that requires proof. Regardless of the merit of the music, its real worth in the performance … Read More

Youngs Stars Competition Teaches Professional Performance Skills in Fun Environment
Melody Music Studios founder and director and teacher, Kathi Kerr, is quite frank about what music learning should be about. It’s right there on the front page of her Melody Music Studios website.
“Our music instructors believe music lessons and voice lessons should be fun, while challenging at the same time. We offer a positive approach to music lessons…”
And while music lessons should be fun for all, many of Melody Music’s students will become professional players. And a professional must develop performance skills at an early age.
“When students participate in a competition, it is a motivating and inspiring experience.” says Kathi, who has owned Melody Music since 1989. “It encourages students to reach their performance peak and it’s really valuable to watch their peers perform. A competition allows students to connect with other young musicians.”
The popularity of music contests like American Idol and The Voice influence not only music students but their parents. “For parents of musical kids, it’s often about balance, even when a child is immensely talented. Parents should be careful to offer a broad and well rounded education and help the child to develop other areas he/she may be interested in.”
Kathi points to the life of Mozart. “Mozart was a child prodigy, but at the end of his life, all he knew was how to make music, and his life was not fulfilling in terms of relationships and every day living. He died unhappy and a pauper. There’s plenty of time to diligently train on the instrument/voice while living a full and enriched life.”
Students at Melody Music Studios Young Stars Competitions are judged on their ability to play and sing with precision and dexterity. The other factors are interpretation/dynamics and stage presence.
What’s the thing Kathi most wants her Young Stars to remember?
“The first thing to remember is to relax, have fun, and believe in yourself. The times I have done my best is when I played the piano for the pure enjoyment of playing, and hoping to share my love of music with others. If the student keeps that in mind, he/she will do their best! Of course winning is a great thing to accomplish, but experiencing the joy of sharing ones music, and listening to others share theirs is the greatest part of the whole experience.”
